For the past five years, a group of high school students and adults from St. John have gone on a 3 or 4-day mission trip to Chicago. Traditionally this trip has focused on ways in which St. John can help provide food for the needy in the windy city. God has provided service opportunities at food kitchens, food pantries, the Chicago Food Depository, Feed, Clothe, and Help the Needy, soup kitchens, and Feed My Starving Children, to name just a few.
In December of 2013, the Chicago group began talking about ways to help provide food for the hungry in Charles City. As we got to talking and brainstorming, the ideas became more cohesive. It was decided that a community kitchen would be the perfect chance to do God’s work here in America’s Hometown.
After a great deal of group and individual prayer from all on the trip regarding this potential mission, it was agreed to make a go of it upon our return to Charles City. God would guide us, we knew.
After several meetings back at St. John, things really started coming together. A name was voted upon by the congregation, donations were given by many at St. John, and a date was set for the first meal of this new God-driven venture aptly named Plates of Plenty.
We ask for your prayers and your well wishes. In addition, if you are interested in volunteering to help with Plates of Plenty or if you have any questions, please feel free to contact the church at 641-228-3397 or call Lisa Kreger at 641-330-0696.
Thank you, and God Bless!
